The Associated Press is republishing stories about a handful of such matches while the canceled grass-court Grand Slam tournament was supposed to be played. MATAMOROS — Las largas filas de los puentes internacionales llamados “viejo” y “nuevo” se vieron sorprendidas por la algarabía causada por los peloteritos con capacidades diferentes de la Liga Pequeña de Béisbol Matamoros AC el sábado.

El equipo de niños beisbolistas de la Categoría Challenger estuvieron solicitando el apoyo de los conductores que permanecían en las filas, solicitando dinero para reunir fondos para su viaje y participar en el torneo “Fun Day 4 Mexicali”, en el estado de Baja California.

“Nuestros niños y niñas van a participar con otros estados”, dijo María Isabel Pérez, coordinadora de la Categoría Challenger, “y por eso estamos pidiendo el apoyo porque no tenemos fondos para el viaje”.

Son alrededor de 20 niños y niñas que junto a sus familias han estado realizando actividades como venta de comida y el “boteo” en los puentes internacionales buscando reunir el dinero suficiente para su viaje.

El torneo de beisbol está dirigido a jóvenes que cuentan con alguna discapacidad, como síndrome de Down, parálisis cerebral o alguna otra dificultad motriz, motivándolos a que jueguen y entrenen este deporte.

Una de las características de Fun Day, es que no hay ganadores, ni derrotados, todos los participantes toman turno al bat y son premiados con una medalla por su participación.

Esta categoría de niños especiales en Tamaulipas se instituyó en 2014, siendo los pioneros de la categoría.

El viaje está programado para los días del 23 al 26 de abril.
